Workers at Vosper Thornycroft shipyard in Southampton are staging a walkout as a protest against a relocation offer.

The 100-year-old shipyard in Woolston is due to close by the end of the year, with all building work moving to Portsmouth.

Bosses have offered what they say is a "very generous" offer to ease the move totalling �1.7m, including minibuses and petrol for the first year.

But the GMB union says that because many staff have walked to work for decades, the compensation package is insufficient.

The company has just won a new contract to build part of two new aircraft carriers, with BAE systems, for the navy.

The work, which will be carried out in Portsmouth, will guarantee jobs for 1,200 people for at least the next decade, and possibly the next 20 years.
