Protesters want weapons information
Harrier fighter
Harrier fighters have been at the base in past exercises
Anti-war campaigners are demanding to know if weapons of mass destruction are being kept at an RAF base in the South West.

They are due to hand a letter to the commanding officer of RAF St Mawgan, near Newquay in Cornwall, in protest against a possible war against Iraq.

A demonstration due to take place at the weekend is the latest in a series of protests across Devon and Cornwall against the prospect of war.

A spokesman for the base says anyone who wants to protest outside the St Mawgan base has the democratic right to do so.

But he said: "The whereabouts of weapons of mass destruction are never discussed for reasons of operational security."

The demonstration is being organised by members of the Stop the War Coalition in the county.

Sheila Johns from the group said: "It's a token of the concern of the people of Cornwall."

It is the latest in a series of anti-war demonstrations across the South West this year.

Last weekend protests took place in Exeter, Holsworthy in north Devon and Redruth in Cornwall.

The biggest protest was in Exeter on Saturday, where a peace coffin was laid on the Cathedral Green.

Members of the Stop the War Coalition said it represented the thousands of Iraqi children who could be killed if war was launched.

All of these events have been leading up to an anti-war rally due to be held in London at Hyde Park next weekend.

About Five buses from Cornwall are 30 from Devon are due to drive up to take part in the London event.
