| Wednesday, 5 February, 2003, 13:49 GMT Inquiry into fatal ambulance delay ![]() Paramedics were delayed by a locked road barrier An inquiry is being carried out after a Shropshire ambulance crew was delayed by a locked road barrier, as it tried to help a man, who later died. Paramedics were called out to treat Ernest Leese, 72, who collapsed in a shop doorway in New Street, Wellington on 29 January. The ambulance arrived promptly, but paramedics had to run about 100 yards to treat Mr Leese, from Donnington. The key to the bollard road barrier was then found and the 72-year-old was driven to hospital in Telford, where he died as the result of a heart attack. The inquiry is being carried out by Shropshire Ambulance Service to establish exactly what went wrong. The findings are due to be released later this week. | See also: 31 Jan 03 | England 27 Jan 03 | England 12 Dec 02 | England Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
