Local Virgin services halved
Virgin Voyager
The new trains have fewer carriages than before
Virgin Trains is cutting recently introduced services between Bristol and Gloucester because of overcrowding.

From 11 January, the hourly service will operate just once every two hours.

The train operator says its main duty is to its long-distance passengers, and that other operators also provide the short-stop services.

Extra services between Bristol and Gloucester were introduced by the company in September.

There was a lack of anticipation of the numbers using these services

A Virgin Train spokesperson told BBC News Online: "We are an inter-city service, not a cross country commuter service."

He dismissed suggestions that overcrowding could be eased by running more trains, saying Virgin was already running at capacity in the region.

'Temporary measure'

A spokesperson for the watchdog Rail Passengers Council and Committee agreed that passengers had a choice for short-stop services.

But she added: "There was a lack of anticipation of the numbers using these services, and it is unfortunate that previously advertised services are now being cut.

"It is good, however, that Virgin is dealing with overcrowding.

"People see the new trains and do not want to sit on the floor.

"We understand this is a temporary measure and want to see Virgin tackle overcrowding and reinstate the local services," she added.
