| Monday, 6 January, 2003, 20:23 GMT Sir Stan's birthplace up for sale ![]() Sir Stanley was born at 89 Seymour Street in 1915 The house where Sir Stanley Matthews was born is up for auction at a guide price lower than the wages many Premiership footballers take home each week. Stoke-on-Trent's most famous son first honed his formidable soccer skills in the back yard of 89 Seymour Street, Hanley, in the city. The two-up, two-down terrace is up for auction at a guide price of 25,000. Sir Stanley, who went on to play 54 times for England, was born there on 1 February, 1915. "The Wizard of Dribble" practised his footballing skills for hours on end by kicking a ball against the walls of the back yard.
He went on to become the most famous footballer of his generation, in a career that spanned 33 years. In 1964, Sir Stanley became the first player to be knighted. He died in 2000. The current owner of the house must feel she deserves some reward when the house comes up for auction. Vendor Sandra Moran told BBC Midlands Today: "We did once find a football under the floorboards (of Sir Stanley's bedroom) but, unfortunately, we threw it away." | See also: 27 Oct 01 | England 26 Oct 01 | England 03 Mar 00 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
