Volunteers are needed to help toads get safely across North Somerset roads to keep the population going.

Toads in Clevedon are migrating to breeding ponds across two busy roads, and volunteers are wanted to help carry them over to safety.

Full training will be given, but volunteers should have their own bucket and torch, and are advised to wear something light or fluorescent. Children need not apply.

Nonetheless, drivers are also being asked to be vigilant along Norton Woods Lane and Moor Lane, and to use alternative routes if possible.

A warning sign is in place for motorists

The parish wildlife warden scheme is a North Somerset Council initiative to ensure a better quality of life in the region.

Peter Burden, the council's executive member for strategic planning, said: "I hope people will see the work that is being done to help the wildlife of North Somerset and gain inspiration from their example.

"I would urge any local people who can spare the time to help with the crossing to get in touch as soon as possible."

The toads migrate to their breeding ponds during mild, damp evenings in January through to February and early March.
