A man has been charged with causing the death of six-year-old Rebecca Sawyer in a New Year's Eve car crash.

Ian Carr, from Ashington in Northumberland, was allegedly the driver of the car that ploughed into the hatchback being driven by Rebecca's father.

Her 18-month-old sister Kirsty was critically injured and is fighting for her life at Newcastle General Hospital.

Mr Carr will appear before magistrates on Saturday accused of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 27-year-old faces a string of other charges relating to the crash, including failing to stop after an accident.

He is also accused of driving while disqualified, having no insurance, failing to report an accident and taking a vehicle without consent.

A man was arrested at the scene of the crash and two others, a man and a woman, gave themselves up to police on New Year's Day.

All three were later bailed by police.

Mr Carr was arrested by police on Thursday night and will appear before magistrates in Bedlington.
