A man who walked the New York Marathon in a 130-pound (59 kilograms) diving suit is to get a commemorative medal six weeks after he finished the event.

Former London firefighter Lloyd Scott, 40, from Rainham in Essex, took five days to walk the 26-mile course, raising thousands of pounds for the families of New York firefighters killed in the terrorist attack.

But because the official race finish time was eight hours after it started, officials said he did not qualify for a medal.

Now Flora London Marathon officials have been sent a New York medal by an anonymous donor.

Mark Warne from Flora London Marathon said they had no idea who sent the medal.

"There is no clue as to the identity of the sender and no one has ever got back to us to ask if it arrived safely."

Mr Lloyd, a former leukaemia sufferer, who raised �150,000 for the charity Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood (Clic) in the London event, told BBC London he was touched by the donor's generosity.

"I want to thank them so much for their kind-heartedness.

"It will be nice to get the medal, but it's not the reason I did the marathon.

"We'll get it framed up and put it in one of the Clic homes-from-home where the children and their families stay while they're undergoing treatment."

He will be presented with his medal on BBC London News on BBC1 at 1830 GMT on Friday.
