| Wednesday, 18 December, 2002, 16:40 GMT Murder verdict on knife killing ![]() The killing happened outside the Fleece Inn A West Yorkshire man who killled a pub-goer when he tried to intervene in a brawl has been jailed for life. Family and friends of the murdered man cheered as the verdict was passed on Leroy Griffiths from Addingham near Ilkley. Griffiths, 47, who is originally from Barbados, was found guilty at Leeds Crown Court of the murder of 21-year-old Mark Webster from Norwood near Harrogate. Mr Webster was killed by a single stab wound to the chest outside the Fleece Inn at Addingham in the early hours of Easter Sunday.
The court heard that Mr Webster tried to calm Griffiths down after he threatened regulars at the Fleece with a knife following an argument with a young woman. Judge Peter Charlesworth said that Griffiths had shown no remorse. He added that he was convicted on overwhelming evidence of deliberately and intentionally killing a "decent and fine young man who was only trying to persuade him to lay down his knife and keep the peace." | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
