The Prince of Wales stressed the importance of the work of Huntingdon Life Sciences when he presented its managing director with the CBE on Friday.

The controversial medical research company in Cambridgeshire has been targeted by animal rights activists for its work which involves testing on animals.

On Friday, Brian Cass received his CBE from the Prince in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection said they were "appalled" that Mr Cass, 55, should be given the award.

After the ceremony, Mr Cass said it had been "a tremendous occasion" and he was proud to receive the CBE.

He said: "The Prince of Wales was concerned to know if we were still having difficulties and wished us the best for the future and stressed the importance of the work.

"Our company and employees have been through a difficult time."

Last year Mr Cass was attacked outside his home by three people carrying baseball bats and using CS spray.

The three were later jailed.
