'Less leg' edict to lollipop ladies

Reflective coats are part of the uniform
Lollipop ladies have been shown "what not to wear" as part of their training.

Among the items considered inappropriate for school crossing patrol wardens are short skirts and stiletto heels.

Nearly 50 wardens from Derbyshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire were in Derby on Thursday for training.

Among the discussion items was appropriate attire.

They do sign a contract to say that they will not alter the coat and reduce its length

A "model" lollipop lady demonstrated the areas in which wardens sometimes go wrong, such as wearing high-heeled shoes and showing too much of their legs.

Patrol supervisor Linda Harrington said: "We are trying to emphasis the customer care angle... that they must look professional."

A key issue was wardens who shortened their coats.

Reflective material

Ms Harrington added: "They do sign a contract to say that they will not alter the coat and reduce its length."

Government legislation prescribes the amount of fluorescent or reflective material wardens must wear.

Wardens are also required to wear the correct hats.

Derby City Council is also attempting to recruit more wardens to fill a shortfall in three areas - Mickleover, Allestree and Littleover.
