| Wednesday, 4 December, 2002, 16:01 GMT Cash boost for deprived estates ![]() The money will be used to help the community Run-down housing estates in Wiltshire are receiving nearly 5m in regeneration funding. The money will be used for a range of projects on Swindon's Parks and East Walcot estates, situated in one of the most deprived wards in the country. The estates, made up of houses from the post-war London overspill, have seen little regeneration since the1960s. Projects likely to go ahead include job creation and training schemes, initiatives to tackle crime and drugs and improved recreational facilities. 'Renewal programme' The South West Regional Development Agency (RDA), Swindon Borough Council and other local partners all contributed to the 4.9m grant. Barrie Thompson, councillor for Parks Ward, said the work done by local people in identifying what needed to be done in their community had now been recognised. "This funding will enable... a major neighbourhood renewal programme that will improve the conditions of all who live here." Ruth Hursey, chair of the Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership, which made the bid and receives the money, said the cash will make a real difference to the community. | See also: 12 Nov 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
