A new state-of-the-art athletics stadium could be built in Manchester, the BBC has learned.

The 6000-seat facility, costing about �3m, would be built alongside the stadium that hosted this year's Commonwealth Games and will become home to Manchester City next season.

The athletics track that was used for the Commonwealth Games was ripped up to make way for City's arrival.

Talks between Manchester City Council and athletics chiefs in Birmingham on Friday could bring the decision a step closer.

World trials

The success of the Games has played a big part in the development of the plans, since it showed Manchester was capable of hosting major athletics meetings.

Part of the profits from the Games would be used to finance the construction of the new stadium.

Work could start at the beginning of 2003 and be ready to host the trials for the athletics world championships next summer.

The venue could also provide a new home for Sale Harriers as part of its commitment to support grass roots athletics.
