| Friday, 29 November, 2002, 11:55 GMT Student dies of tuberculosis ![]() Students at Southampton University are being tested A university student in Southampton has died from pulmonary tuberculosis. Zimbabwean Stephen Muchengeti was found dead in Glen Eyre hall of residence in Southampton. Mr Muchengeti had only recently arrived in the UK and was five weeks into his nursing course when he died. Fellow students at the University of Southampton who were in close contact with the 22-year-old are now being tested for the disease. Low risk It appears Mr Muchengeti already had the disease when he came to the UK but had not shown any symptoms. A spokeswoman for the University said that no one else had caught the disease from the dead student and that the risk of infection was low. "People who shared a flat with Stephen have been treated and given health advice," she said. Mr Muchengeti had not worked on any wards during his time as a student and so no patients are at risk. | See also: 13 Nov 02 | England 10 Sep 02 | Leicester 2002 26 Apr 01 | Wales 18 Apr 01 | Health Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
