Safety group fears 'another Selby'
Selby rail crash site
The group says money is needed to upgrade bridges
Delays to improvements on crash barriers could see "another Selby", according to supporters of the Huddersfield-based road safety group Brake.

Vital safety work to road and rail bridges is taking longer than expected, a campaigning group is to tell MPs.

The group are joining the families who lost relatives in the Selby train crash to lobby members of the All Party Parliamentary Group on road safety on Wednesday.

They are calling for more road bridge improvements.

Both working groups identified that this type of accident is extremely rare

Highways Agency spokesman
Cathy Keeler, spokeswoman for Brake, told BBC NewsOnline: "We are aware work hasn't been done.

"Our expert, John Knapton, a structural engineering consultant, has identified work which still has to be done.

"We are going to discuss what action the government should take to speed up the safety work."

Mary Dunn, whose husband Stephen was the driver of the goods train in the Selby tragedy, is attending the meeting with her son James.

She is to give MPs and experts her views on what needs to be done to prevent such a tragedy happening again.

Derailed train

Ten people died when a GNER train from York to London King's Cross crashed at Great Heck between Goole and Selby in north Yorkshire.

A Land Rover slid down an embankment from the M62 into the path of an express train.

The express was derailed by the impact and collided with a freight train travelling in the opposite direction

Motorist Gary Hart was jailed for five years in January for causing death by dangerous driving.

He fell asleep at the wheel of his Land Rover.

Safety fences

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said following the Selby accident an independent investigation was carried out and two working groups have looked at safety fences.

He said: "Both working groups identified that this type of accident is extremely rare.

"They proposed a measured and balanced approach, firstly to assess the risks at all sites and then prioritise and carry out appropriate mitigation measures."

He said the safety performance of trunk roads and bridges was continuously monitored and improved.
