Strikers offer help at road crash
Green goddesses
The driver was released before fire crews arrived
Three fire crews in North Yorkshire have broken their strike to help rescue a man trapped in the wreckage of his lorry.

Two full-time crews from Ripon and one from Harrogate joined a retained crew in responding to a crash on the A1.

The accident, involving two heavy goods vehicles, occurred at the junction with the A59 on the southbound carriageway at Allerton Park.

A Green Goddess and an RAF rescue tender attended the scene at around 1100 GMT.

Long tailbacks

They released the trapped driver from his vehicle before any of the fire crews arrived.

The man was taken to Harrogate District Hospital with minor injuries but was later discharged.

North Yorkshire police said the accident shut the southbound carriageway for a time.

Traffic tailbacks stretched to 10 miles but diversions were set up.
