Students in York have responded to claims they are the most boring in the country.

York undergraduates prefer a cup of tea and an early night to traditional students pastimes such as drinking to excess, it has been claimed.

The comments were made by a mobile phone company as part of a competition to find Britain's wildest undergraduate.

Tom Connor: Licensing laws to blame

But Tom Connor, president of York University's student union, blamed the city's licensing laws for the boring tag.

He said: "I didn't realise just how backwards York was going to be when I arrived here.

"There really is hardly anywhere to drink after 11pm.

"Things might be about to change, but at the moment there is one pub that everyone barges down to after 11pm, because you can drink there until 12."
