Plan for year-round twilight shopping
Shopping
Twilight shopping all year is under consideration
Shoppers in Leeds could soon be able to go late-night shopping every weeknight of the year.

Retailers are discussing proposals that would see stores emulate London by staying open until 8pm.

A survey of shopping habits in the city centre will also be carried out to assess the appeal of the idea.

Some city centre stores already open later in the run-up to Christmas.

It would help put Leeds on the map as one of Europe's leading 24-hour cities

Cllr Elizabeth Minkin

Nigel Ward-Stevens, manager of Debenhams and spokesman for the Leeds Retail Group, said: "We hope to become the first centre outside London to offer a true twilight experience.

"We know from the success of out-of-town stores that many people go home after a day at work before heading out to do some shopping.

"In city centres, at the moment only central London actually caters for this trend, with stores doing brisk business as late as 8 or 9pm.

"Obviously it's up to individual retailers and service providers as to whether they decide to participate."

Leeds councillor Elizabeth Minkin, who is responsible for the city centre, said late night shopping, would increase choice for customers and reduce rush hour congestion.

She added: "It would also help put Leeds on the map as one of Europe's leading 24-hour cities."
