St.Edmundsbury Borough Council is spending 31,000 to stop the problem. The barriers will go up at St Andrew's Street North, Prospect Row, Ram Meadow and Parkway car parks. Mark Jones, who lives next to the St Andrew's Street North car park, said many people were afraid to walk across the car park at night. Simplest solution "They're racing through the car park at over 40 mph and then pulling handbrake turns. "In Elsey's Yard there's a block of disabled people, some of whom are in wheelchairs, and it's particularly dangerous for them," said Mr Jones. Inspector Mike Gooch said it was a difficult problem to police and barriers were the simplest solution. "We have got a thick file on the number of times we've been called out but the only offences committed are for defects with their cars. "We decided to tackle the problem by preventing them getting in the car parks in the first place." | See also: 27 Jul 01 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
