| Wednesday, 13 November, 2002, 13:17 GMT Blame game over roadworks ![]() The council says the roadworks are "notorious" A south London council has got so fed up taking complaints about roadworks that it has put up signs laying the blame with Transport for London (TfL). Officers at Lambeth Council say they receive hundreds of calls each week about the city's "most notorious roadworks" around Vauxhall Cross. They believe the council is getting a bad name because of the scheme which is actually the responsibility of TfL. But TfL says it is baffled by the signs and claims it is only implementing the council's scheme after Lambeth failed to find the money to fund it.
It includes numbers for Transport for London and the Greater London Authority. Councillor Andrew Sawdon said people telephoned him with complaints over the weekend. He blamed TfL for "mismanagement" and failing to put up adequate signs. But TfL's street management director Peter Heather said: "We do have large signs identifying the work as ours, including contact numbers, but if Lambeth want to put up more signs assisting the public we would be more than happy." He added that while the project was difficult, improvements would be felt by Lambeth residents and anyone travelling through. Motorists can expect the roadworks to be finished by Christmas. | See also: 15 Jul 02 | Politics 26 Feb 02 | UK 24 Nov 01 | Scotland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
