| Tuesday, 5 November, 2002, 09:51 GMT A warm welcome for prison visitors ![]() Dartmoor is one of Britain's oldest prisons A new visitors' centre has been officially opened at Dartmoor Prison. The jail was heavily criticised in last year's Prison Inspectorate Report and the centre is one of a number of major reforms. The centre is intended to be a welcoming area for visitors and a contrast from the austere facade of the Napoleonic building. Run by volunteers, it will offer advice and support for families and help the resettlement of prisoners. Basic facilities Prison managers say there is evidence that maintaining family ties helps in the resettlement of offenders. "The vast majority of families that come to the prison have travelled a huge distance to get here," said Sue Caley of the Prison Advice and Care Trust. "They now have somewhere they can get information, prepare for visits and be warm. Dartmoor is renowned for its weather." Visitors previously relied on basic facilities in a temporary building. There are also plans for a garden and seating area for visitors. | See also: 19 Sep 02 | England 01 Feb 02 | World at One 01 Feb 02 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
