| Tuesday, 29 October, 2002, 07:21 GMT Dangerous headstones threat ![]() Council officials say many gravestones are unsafe More than 2,500 headstones in Lancaster could be in danger of falling on visitors. The number of potentially dangerous memorials is revealed in a report to members of Lancaster City Council. A pilot project has already been carried out at one cemetery, where unsafe memorials have either been repaired or laid flat. The report concentrates on memorials over five feet high, as they are considered to be more dangerous if they are not secure. An investigation at Morecambe cemetery found more than half of the stones were a potential problem. They were either repaired, reinforced or laid flat on the ground. Council members are now to consider the costs of a similar programme at six other cemeteries. | See also: 04 Sep 02 | England 12 Dec 01 | England 21 Oct 02 | England 26 Aug 02 | England 02 Jul 02 | N Ireland 16 May 01 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
