| Friday, 25 October, 2002, 09:03 GMT 10:03 UK Learner driver stuck for ride ![]() Standard driving school cars are too small A Derbyshire man says he cannot pass his driving test because he cannot fit behind the wheel of a car. David Nottingham is 6ft 6ins, has a 58ins chest and size 14 shoes. His family have tried more than 30 driving schools and have yet to find one which can accommodate him. Mr Nottingham, 18, is hoping an organisation or individual will be able to provide a suitable vehicle.
At the moment Mr Nottingham travels for four hours on a bus to and from his home in Ilkeston to Buxton, where he is training as a chef. He is already having driving lessons, but can only be taught in a simulator or from the passenger seat. He said: "The main problems are my right arm which presses against the door, which doesn't give me much control. "My legs are wedged under the steering wheel and it's hard to use the pedals as my feet have to be squeezed back at a painful angle." Roger Dobson, from the British School of Motoring, said: "It's very unusual as we try to cater for most people from tall to short, thin to broad. "Most driving schools use smaller cars for economy and ease of driving." Mr Nottingham's mother, Joy, said: "We have tried so many instructors but no one has been able to help us, they all tell us to try someone else. "So we are appealing to any instructor who has a suitable vehicle to come forward and help us out." | See also: 15 May 02 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
