University plans 300m expansion
Leicester university
The project is the largest in the university's history
A 300m scheme to create a "state-of-the-art" campus at the University of Leicester has been unveiled.

The 30-year plan is the largest in the university's history, expanding building space by 30% and student numbers from 19,000 to 25,000.

It is hoped the new facilities will meet the needs of future generations of researchers and students.

We will have an opportunity to promote a range of activities the university has not had available before

Professor Bob Burgess, University Vice-Chancellor

Much of the campus at the University of Leicester was developed 30 years ago.

Without the investment the university said it would struggle to cope with the 6,000 extra students who are expected to join courses over the next decade.

The work will create 1,000 jobs for the university.

Professor Bob Burgess, University Vice-Chancellor said: "This will be the largest building programme the university has ever seen.

"It means we will have an opportunity to promote a range of activities the university has not had available before."

Upgraded accommodation

He said the university was looking at the possible future needs of students - such as increased flexible and part-time learning.

Facilities would cover research, teaching, learning, recreation, sport, catering, business, conferences and public programmes.

Building projects include a major extension to the University Library, a new learning resources centre and upgraded accommodation.

The central campus will be given a new central square to form a "lively and attractive, recognisable heart".

Architect Steven Pidwill said importance would be placed on pedestrian routes, landscaping and the creation of squares and courts.

Consultation period

The plan was welcomed as "exciting and imaginative" by President of the University of Leicester Students' Union Pete Lewis.

Work on a 20m Biomedical Research building has already started.

The rest of the development plan will follow a six-month consultation period, with work due to start in 2003-4.

The money will come from a mixture of funds including Higher Education Funding Council for England capital, loans and business income.
