| Wednesday, 11 September, 2002, 05:07 GMT 06:07 UK Memorial for twin towers hero ![]() Mr Rescorla's widow Susan has remained in the USA A memorial to a Cornish man who died a hero in the 11 September attacks will be unveiled in the town of Hayle. The family of Rick Rescorla have arranged for a six-feet-high granite tribute to be unveiled in memory of him in his home town on Wednesday. A street in Hayle was renamed in honour of the 62-year-old security guard earlier this year. Mr Rescorla took charge of the evacuation of South Tower and is said to have helped hundreds of people escape.
"It will contain a plaque saying why the stone is there and what Rick did on 11 September. "There is also an eagle on it because he loved to watch eagles flying. "We've had donations from all over the UK and the United States. "The American Legion is still fund raising now for the memorial." Many relatives of Mr Rescorla will attend the ceremony, but his widow, Susan, is remaining in the United States. 'Remembered fondly' Mr Daniels said: "Susan is very tired from all the events she's been to and all the questions she keeps being asked. "We are hoping to do something at Rick's old school in the next few months and Susan will be coming over for that."
The relatives of those who died on 11 September have spent much of the last year in the media spotlight. This is particularly true in the case of Mr Rescorla's family because his actions on the day have been celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic. Additionally, his record as a Vietnam veteran has been documented in a recent book. Mr Daniels said: "The story keeps getting rekindled. "I find the attention of the media is okay really because it's actually helped the grieving process. "I can see how it can get too much for some people but it's good that Rick should be remembered so fondly by so many people. |
