Orchestra turns to lounge music
CBSO members
The musicians were in full concert dress
A group of classical music lovers heard a live concert performed by a top orchestra - in the comfort of a Birmingham lounge.

The unusual concert was the result of the Win An Orchestra in Your Living Room competition, run by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO).

It was won by Ruth Henderson, who opened up her Stratford Road flat to six CBSO musicians, plus as many friends and neighbours as could squeeze in.

Timpanist Peter Hill said: "We've never given a concert in a 16-foot by 16-foot lounge before."

There was a full house for the concert

The musicians - dressed in coat tails - played a selection of popular classics on the trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, keyboard, drums and violin.

They invited children in the front row - on Ms Henderson's sofa - to play along on tambourines and triangles to pieces such as the William Tell Overture, Grieg's Peer Gynt, and well-known television theme tunes.

Ms Henderson said she had entered the competition, organised in conjunction with a newspaper, after she and her five-year-old son Joe heard the orchestra perform in a local park.

"Joe really loved it, so it's made him really excited."

A spokesman for the CBSO confirmed it was the smallest venue they had ever played.

"They're used to playing in major concert halls around the world.

"But everybody enjoyed it."
