Fire destroys golfing landmark
Firefighter
Four crews were called out early on Thursday
Police and fire crews are sifting through the remains of a 75-year-old golf pavilion, which was destroyed by fire.

The fire at Taunton's Vivary Park golf club is being treated as suspicious.

Four crews from Somerset Fire Brigade were called to the golf club at 0230 BST but could do little to save the listed, wooden structure.

The building, which is owned by the local authority, was used for storage and changing and also contained golfing equipment worth thousands of pounds.

Mike Ware: "Extensive damage"

Mike Ware, from Somerset Fire Brigade said: "We are treating it as a doubtful origin at the moment, purely and simply because the speed with which the whole thing happened.

"We received a number of calls from the public, so we were able to respond as quickly as possible but the damage is too extensive."

Firefighters managed to prevent the blaze spreading to the newer section of the clubhouse next door.

Mike Donohue, from Vivary Golf Club said: "It's a very sad sight to see, history going up in smoke like that.

"There has also been a lot of golf equipment lost in there."
