| Tuesday, 13 August, 2002, 14:25 GMT 15:25 UK Doorman's face 'covered in blood' ![]() Trevor Thirlwall was said to be "covered by glass" A bouncer's face was covered in blood after he was allegedly attacked by three footballers, a waitress told a jury on Tuesday. Ilona Jankovich said doorman Trevor Thirlwall, 28, was surrounded by glass when she found him in the reception of the Wellington private members club in Knightsbridge, central London. He had allegedly been attacked by Chelsea stars John Terry and Jody Morris and Wimbledon player Des Byrne, with Mr Terry having hit him in the face with a bottle, after they were thrown out of the club for unruly behaviour. Mr Terry denies wounding Mr Thirlwall with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and possessing a bottle as an offensive weapon.
Mr Byrne denies possessing a bottle as an offensive weapon and all three footballers deny affray. Ms Jankovich told Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court she had seen the three players behaving in an "aggressive and cocky" way before the attack on 4 January. She walked into reception as Mr Thirlwall and another bouncer Shaun Brice were asking the three players to leave. She said: "The three men seemed quite aggressive. They were being quite cocky I guess. "The two doormen were really calm, very, very calm, just talking to them reasonably with no raised voices." 'Blood over face' Later, when she returned to reception, she encountered Mr Thirlwall at the top of the stairs. She said: "He was standing with his back to me and he had his arms outstretched to stop people coming up. "His voice was shaking and he was telling everyone to stay down. Then I saw the glass broken on the floor. "I didn't realise how serious it was so I went up, I asked him to turn round and saw his face. "I saw blood all over his face. There was glass by his feet in reception by the front door." Customer Zoe Lynch-Ball, who was in reception when a fracas between the footballers and bouncers started, said: "One of the three footballers came through the door quite aggressively and they started fighting, it was quite a charge. "It was at Trevor and he swung his fist and that's all I can tell you. "It got messy and I couldn't see what was going on. "A second man came through the door and he went for the other bouncer Shaun. 'Boxer's punch' "They were going in fighting through the doors. I was a bit scared. "There was all blood and stuff and then the police arrived." The jury has seen CCTV footage showing Mr Byrne and Mr Terry as the two men she described coming through the doors. Earlier Desmond de Silva QC, representing Mr Terry, said the bouncers were, in fact, the aggressors. He said Trevor Thirlwall's brother Matthew, a professional boxer, had knocked Mr Byrne to the ground with a "boxer's punch". CCTV footage showed Trevor Thirlwall kneeling over Mr Byrne about to punch him while he was on the ground, said Mr de Silva. The trial continues. | See also: 09 Aug 02 | England 08 Aug 02 | England 07 Aug 02 | England 06 Aug 02 | England 05 Aug 02 | England 05 Aug 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
