Police have said they are struggling to cope as Nottingham becomes a centre for stag and hen parties.

Latest figures show about 100,000 young people head into the city centre every Saturday night.

Nottingham has been likened to Dublin as a place where organised stag and hen parties head for a night out.

Senior police have now said the number of bars and clubs in the city centre is reaching saturation point and their resources are being stretched.

"If we are not at that point we are very, very close," said superintendent Alan Butler, who is responsible for policing the city centre.

"I'm sure I really speak for all the emergency services, the health workers and the city council.

"It is getting increasingly difficult to plan for what is a problem dispersing over 24 hours a day."

Some firms are even offering package tours to the city for stag and hen parties.

Mr Butler said: "They are staying over the weekend, they are booking into hotels - it is an organised business and it is all part of the regeneration of the city.

"It is almost, we are told, taking over or equalling Dublin in Ireland for that sort of weekend.

"It shows you the status Nottingham is now enjoying among night time revellers."
