Rafael Vinoly will design a new 26m theatre in the St George's area of the city. It is part of a wider proposal for a cultural quarter that will also include a film and media centre and live music venue. Vinoly has won international acclaim for designing buildings in the US, Japan and South America.
Vinoly said: "All of us involved are looking forward to getting started on the design process and realising the vision for the Leicester performing arts centre. "I think this is a unique opportunity to reaffirm the role of art as a force for creating civic pride." The centre will house two theatres, rehearsal, production and training facilities and will replace the present Haymarket Theatre. Leicester council leader Ross Willmott said the new building will "put Leicester on the map for urban design". | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
