A world-renowned architect has been chosen to help shape the design of a new cultural quarter in Leicester.

Rafael Vinoly will design a new �26m theatre in the St George's area of the city.

It is part of a wider proposal for a cultural quarter that will also include a film and media centre and live music venue.

Vinoly has won international acclaim for designing buildings in the US, Japan and South America.

It is Vinoly's first major project in the UK

This development is his first major commission in the UK.

Vinoly said: "All of us involved are looking forward to getting started on the design process and realising the vision for the Leicester performing arts centre.

"I think this is a unique opportunity to reaffirm the role of art as a force for creating civic pride."

The centre will house two theatres, rehearsal, production and training facilities and will replace the present Haymarket Theatre.

Leicester council leader Ross Willmott said the new building will "put Leicester on the map for urban design".
