Maria Wallis is the first woman to hold the post
Devon and Cornwall Constabulary's new Chief Constable has taken up her post.

Maria Wallis has moved from a previous position as Deputy Chief Constable of Sussex Police.

Ms Wallace is the first woman to hold the post and only the fourth woman in the UK to be made Chief Constable.

She takes charge following the retirement of present Chief Constable, Sir John Evans.

Ms Wallis is looking forward to the job

Ms Wallis has been a police officer for nearly 26 years with the last seven years spent in Sussex, having transferred from the Metropolitan Police as an Assistant Chief Constable.

She has been vocal on a variety of national issues, including domestic violence, harassment and sexual offences involving adults.

She said at the time of her appointment: "I am absolutely delighted to be selected for this important role in this wonderful area.

"I am looking forward to working closely with the staff of Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, the Police Authority and the community we serve."

Sir John Evans' last official duties were over the weekend.

He took part in a dedication ceremony for a memorial garden at the force headquarters in Exeter.

It has been built in memory of staff who have given their lives during service.

Ms Wallis says she supports the call for more treatment of drug addicts, but maintains the Devon and Cornwall force will continue to prosecute people caught using cannabis.
