Fair returns after disease blight
Visitors to Appleby Horse Fair
Travellers from across the UK are returning to the fair
One of Cumbria's biggest tourist attractions has been revived following the foot-and-mouth crisis.

The Appleby Horse Fair attracts thousands of travellers from all over Britain.

The loss of the event in 2001 saw local firms miss out on thousands of pounds.

Organisers say local hotels and bed and breakfast establishments are fully booked for the fair's return.

The fair started on Thursday, a mile outside Appleby-in-Westmorland.

The date has allowed visitors to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee before starting their journeys to Appleby.

The event is one of the biggest fairs of its kind in Europe and is held traditionally in June.

Fair committee chairman Keith Morgan, said: "Everyone is so happy that we have been able to go ahead after the devastating effects of foot and mouth last year.

Badly hit

"A lot of businesses suffered when we lost the event but we are happy to see so many people returning."

Several hundred horses are normally brought to the fair to be sold.

The event also attracts a large numbers of tourists.

Cumbria was one of the worst affected counties during the foot-and-mouth crisis, which led to millions of pounds being lost by the regions tourism industry.
