Universities are being encouraged to attract students from a wider range of backgrounds.

And for the fourth year, the university funding councils have published figures looking at the social profile of students entering higher education.

There are a number of indicators used for this, with the table below showing the proportion of pupils from state schools at institutions.

The funding council sets a "benchmark" for the proportion that institutions should achieve - which is shown in the right hand column.

These latest figures relate to the 2000-2001 academic year.
