| Tuesday, 15 October, 2002, 08:28 GMT 09:28 UK Confidence in A-levels in tatters ![]() Many students may have their hopes dashed Students are facing up to the fact that they may not see any improvement in their A-level grades following an inquiry into allegations of grade fixing.
Now thousands of students who have been in limbo for weeks over their A-level results - and their university plans - are realising that their individual situation may not have changed. Disillusioned Former pupil at Abbey School in Reading, Georgia Blake - who was still waiting for news of her results on Tuesday morning - said her confidence in the exam system was completely undermined. "I'm still waiting for my results and I have been since June," said Georgia.
For Katherine Rutland, the review brought no change to her grades - she has now lost her place at Cambridge University after getting ABB at A-level. "I've lost confidence in the system as well - I don't know who to trust," she said. 'Odd results' The girls' head teacher, Barbara Stanley, said confidence in the A-level system had not been fully restored by the independent inquiry. "This is another 1,000 grades changed and that's on top of re-marks, it's not instead of re-marks.
Ms Stanley said the school would press ahead with re-marks if students' grades had not been improved after the review process. "We still don't think the results - in certain modules, not across the board - were right. "How can people get five As and a U or five As and an E?" An "awful lot of work" was needed to restore confidence in the exams, she said. "And we need to be in on the system as well and make sure that by next year we have a system we can trust."
