The way the results of the new AS-level exams have been delivered has been criticised by pupils and teachers.

Hundreds of thousands of students got the results of their AS-level exams on Thursday morning.

But many schools will not know how they have performed under the controversial new system until Thursday evening because they have to work out the grades by hand.

Melvyn Kershaw, head teacher of Haybridge High School in Hagley, Worcestershire, has estimated that it will take his staff at least 10 person hours to work out their overall school picture.

'Electronic form'

Staff will have to do it by hand because of the complicated way the results have been sent to them by the examining boards.

He told the BBC Midlands Today programme: "It's a nonsense.

"We now have modern IT systems and we do expect data to come through in an electronic form so we can load directly into our systems and we can manipulate that quite easily.

"But that's not going to happen."

One angry student said: "This morning I just had a page of figures and it didn't make any sense.

"I was really nervous and I panicked."

A review of the implementation of the AS-level system is already underway at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
