Last week you voted on who had had the greatest impact in the areas of culture, showbiz, politics and sport over the past year. Now it's time to choose between the winners.

Each weekend, BBC News Online's Newsmaker profile looks at someone who has had an impact on the week's news. At the end of year, we are asking which of the people profiled has had the biggest impact on you.

Last week tens of thousands of you voted in four separate categories, and these four personalities were the winners. (Full results in each category are listed under "See also" on the right hand side.)

In Showbiz, the outright winner was Ozzy Osbourne (28%), seeing off his nearest challenger Angus Deayton (23%). Ozzy has become one of the surprise celebrities of the year, second time around, thanks to what he and his family revealed of themselves in MTV's fly-on-the-wall hit show.

In Culture, it was a rare victory for a designer. Apple fans seem to have rallied round Jonathan Ive, the British designer of both the original and new iMacs, computers which have achieved that rare feat of being distinctive. Ive emerged the winner, after early voting favoured anti-matter pioneer Paul Dirac and author Ian Fleming.

In Politics and Society, politicians like Bill Clinton and Clare Short did not win your votes. But two people who have had an impact on politics in less conventional ways certainly did - Ali Hewson, the wife of U2's Bono, who campaigned against the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant was one. And the winner was filmmaker Michael Moore whose book Stupid White Men and film Bowling for Columbine have challenged the political establishment.

In sport, two footballers ruled the roost. Rio Ferdinand, one of the bright spots of England's World Cup campaign, was the runner up. But way out in front was Gary Lineker - now a fixture on television screens but in the news for his bid to save his beloved Leicester FC.
