Papers report Cheney's 'call to arms'
The warning by US Vice President Dick Cheney that America must take pre-emptive action to counter the threat posed by Iraq is analysed by the Times.

The paper views Mr Cheney's "strong words" as the clearest signal yet from within the Bush administration that an invasion of Iraq is unavoidable.

The Daily Telegraph describes the remarks as a call to arms for America's allies against Saddam Hussein and notes a fierce public debate has opened up in Washington between those who support and those who oppose military action.

The Daily Mirror is in no doubt whose side it's on.

Writing in the paper, the veteran reporter John Pilger dismisses claims Iraq has built an arsenal of "weapons of mass destruction" and says Tony Blair's advisers also know the allegations are "nonsense".

'Swanky or shanty'

What do you get if you take 5,000 oysters, 1,000 of lobster and other shellfish, 4,400 of fillet steak and chicken breasts, add 1,000 of bacon and sausage, 450 of salmon and 220 of that tasty South African fish, kingclip?

The answer, according to the Sun, is the stockpile of food ordered by just one of the "swanky" hotels catering for the delegates at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.

"It Makes You Sick", says the paper's frontpage headline before more pages inside contrast the lavish lifestyle on offer to delegates' with the squalor of a shanty town two miles away.

Arms 'embargo'

A report by the Mirror claims Tony Blair has tightened up arms sales to Israel in order to head off a rebellion by Labour MPs.

The paper says it has obtained a leaked memo from the government's export control director to a senior Israeli government official stating it will no longer allow the export of military equipment which was previously permitted.

Rabbi 'condemns Israel'

The Guardian carries an exclusive Interview with Britain's Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks, which it says "will send shockwaves through Israel and the world Jewish community".

According to the paper, Professor Sacks - who is about to publish a new book - has departed from his usual policy of offering only public endorsement of Israel.

The current conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is tragic, he says, and adds: "It is forcing Israel into postures that are incompatible in the long run with our deepest ideals".

Bargain holiday

The Daily Mail features a story about a family from Liverpool that suggests the internet might be incompatible with sound business.

Nick Dryer and his wife apparently couldn't believe their eyes when they saw return flights to Florida being advertised online for 25, so they lost no time in booking seats for themselves, their two daughters and Mr Dryer's parents at a saving of around 3,000.

The company, First Choice, says a member of staff typed the wrong fare on its website, but the firm said it was glad the Dryers enjoyed their holiday.

Clear as a Bell

It's hard to imagine Andi Bell from London getting his numbers mixed up.

As the Independent explains, the 34-year-old writer has just been crowned World Memory Champion.

His feat? Memorising the order of 1,196 playing cards, which is 23 decks, in an hour.

Mr Bell says it's something everyone can do.
