| Wednesday, 31 July, 2002, 10:02 GMT 11:02 UK Stonehenge among UK's 'wonders' ![]() The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben topped the poll The "Seven Wonders of Britain" span 4,000 years, from Stonehenge to the London Eye, according to a study. More than 2,500 adults from across the country selected "must-see" tourist attractions to be the UK's answer to the original Seven Wonders of the World.
But the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben topped the poll. Staffordshire theme park Alton Towers was the overwhelming winner in a parallel survey of teenagers. They also chose Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. Future wonder But both surveys agreed on their choice for Wonder of the Future - Antony Gormley's giant Angel of the North sculpture on the outskirts of Gateshead. English Tourism Council chairman Alan Britten said: "The survey reflects our own experience of the endless allure of the crown jewels of our tourist attractions.
"The mixture of old and new attractions is a source of fascination for overseas tourists and pride among the people who live here." However, Scottish National Party MSP Bruce Crawford said the survey, which does not include any attractions north of the border, was "flawed". "We are asking the people who compiled this survey to withdraw it because it casts a slur on the Scottish tourist industry," Mr Crawford said. The survey was commissioned by the Yellow Pages telephone directory. Chief executive of Yellow Pages publisher Yell John Condron said: "We hope this timely survey encourages people to explore or rediscover the wonders in their own regions." |
