I've recently had the pleasure of visiting London and have seen the new City Hall first hand. It looks like something you'd see in either a high-fever flu dream or low-budget science fiction movie from the 1960s. I feel very cheated over this building. I live 300 yards from it in Shad Thames and pass it each day, when I am in London and go to work. The design that was revealed to the public upon its announcement a few years ago, was inspiring and genuinely something to be proud of. However, somehow, on the way to completion, we finished up with this "dumpy dalek" ! It is simply ugly and sad. My question is what happened to the original design? Was it changed by the planning authorities or have the public simply been swindled again by the architects? Those working inside are actually the best off - they don't have to look at it ! Does the name "tricorn centre" ring any bells? In comparison to the fantastic London Underwriter's Centre across the Thames, this building is utterly unremarkable. I suppose it is made of self-cleaning glass? It is a beautiful example of architecture and of Fosters work. I also believe that it is located in the most fitting surroundings. The resurgence of steel and glass buildings in many cities has given rise to an expression of modern thought and surprisingly these pieces of "art" do not take away from the historical significance of its surroundings. London is a progressive city and has exhibited this architectural trend extremely well. More buildings of this kind please. We live in the twenty first century, let's move with the times and keep improving our city. Just because something is different doesn't mean it's bad. Please try not to be blinkered, and you will appreciate great design. You gotta admit, it beats the hell out of traditional British gothic "gargoyle" style or tenement flat box style. It actually brings London into the *20th* Century :-) | Top UK stories now: Links to more UK stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
