| Monday, 3 June, 2002, 16:46 GMT 17:46 UK Kenya joins Jubilee celebrations British soldiers joined in the beacon ceremonies One of nearly 2,000 beacons to be lit around the world in celebration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee is already burning in Kenya. A team of 10 British soldiers climbed Mount Kenya to set the beacon aflame and toast the Queen on Monday morning. It was there in the Treetops safari camp that the then Princess Elizabeth awoke to find she had become Queen 50 years ago. On Monday she was due to light the final beacon in a chain that runs through Commonwealth nations and the UK. The first was lit on the Polynesian island of Tonga. One of the most remote celebrations was at the British Antarctic Survey's Rothera research base in the Antarctic, where scientists were holding sub-zero jubilee celebrations.
At the other end of the world, 23 children are building a large bonfire beacon out of Arctic driftwood. In Afghanistan British troops lit a beacon at their base camp in Kabul. And in New Zealand the son of the British High Commissioner lit a beacon in Wellington, as crowds of onlookers sang the National Anthem. On Sunday at the North Pole, Ann Daniels and Caroline Hamilton - after breaking records by becoming the first all-women team to walk to both Poles - sang the National Anthem before heading home. Other celebrations will be taking place in locations as diverse as Vietnam, Greece and the United States - where in New York the Empire State Building will be lit up in purple and gold on Tuesday evening in recognition of the Jubilee. British military personnel will also be celebrating in Bosnia, Belize, Brunei, Canada, Cyprus, the Falklands, Germany, Gibraltar, Kosovo, Portugal and even Russia. |
