Indian pauper strikes lottery gold
Indians on the internet
Bensraj is the fourth winner of the online lottery
An Indian man earning about $3 a day as a builder has won a $1m lottery jackpot.

Mangad Bensraj from Mangad, Kerala, has said he and his wife Maria want to use the money to build a school or hospital for the poor in his home town.

My family could not afford to educate me as we were poor... Now I want to educate my only daughter

Mangad Bensraj
He is the fourth winner of the country's first online lottery.

"My family could not afford to educate me as we were poor. Now I want to educate my only daughter and I am planning to build a school or a hospital for the poor children in my village," Mr Bensraj said.

He only discovered he was the winner of the private lottery from a newspaper which said the lottery company was trying to find the owner of the lucky ticket.

He is now being taken on a tour of India by the lottery company to promote their scheme.

He said he would not stop building houses for other people as it was the only thing he knew how to do.

Mr Bensraj said he did not plan to buy a car - he did not even know how to ride a bicycle.

But he had bought a schoolbag for his four-year-old daughter after learning of his good fortune.

Lotteries are only legal in certain states in India, but more than 20 million people buy tickets each day, spending about $10bn annually.
