| Thursday, 6 June, 2002, 15:24 GMT 16:24 UK Sticking it out in Delhi "For the moment, we've chosen to stay" As the threat of war looms, the British Government has urged all British nationals to leave India. One couple, Jackie and Tony Burchell, tell BBC News Online why they will not be packing their bags yet: "My husband Tony and I have been living in India for three years. Tony is an engineer helping to construct Delhi's first underground railway system. "We've heard the announcement from the British High Commission asking us to leave India and we have given it much thought.
"But, for the moment, we've chosen to stay. "My husband has a project to complete and I love my husband and back his commitment. "He works for a Japanese company and his employers can't understand what the fuss is about. And the Delhi Metro authorities want their system built. Love for India "We adore India and we are very happy here. "We feel that we've come to know the Indian people and they have reassured us that we have little to fear.
"Our son is away in Japan, watching the World Cup, and is due to return in August. "Despite all that we've read and heard, we don't think there's going to be a war. "For me personally, I am more worried about my family back in Britain who are anxious for my well being. "My mum and dad and sisters are very worried and have been in constant touch. "They are pleading with us to go home. "But we've decided to stay. Sticking it out "Many of our friends have returned home, but they've mainly done so after being persuaded by their families back in the UK. "And there are some of us who are staying on.
"We've heard that the British authorities are warning people to leave before it gets too late. "In a way, I think it's to try and get most Britons out to facilitate and easier evacuation later. "But for those of us who have projects to complete and other loyalties, it's not time to leave just as yet." |
