| Monday, 18 November, 2002, 13:55 GMT Arab press seeks 'fair' inspections ![]() Many have doubts about the inspector's true agenda Iraq's press has said the country will fully co-operate with United Nations weapons inspectors, the first of whom arrived in Baghdad on Monday. However some Arab papers are not convinced the inspectors will be fair. Iraq Babil: "We are keen to make their mission successful more than anybody else in order to expose the lies of US and British governments. We want these teams to prove to the Americans that our country is free from weapons of mass destruction." Al-Thawra: "The commission and the agency should maintain their independence, neutrality and honesty and should respect Iraq's dignity and its sovereignty and security... The inspections which began in 1991 and ended in 1998 were not objective, neutral, or honest." Qatar Al-Rayah: "The most important interference in the way of the UN arms inspectors in Iraq will be the planting of American CIA spies to divert the inspection operations from their professional course and fabricate excuses to condemn Iraq and accuse it of non-cooperation, which will be the code word for a start of military action." UAE Al-Khalij: "The USA spares no means of humiliating a number of Arab countries in order to bring them to their knees and impose on them complete submission... No one is taken in anymore by the American lies about democracy, civil society and the rule of law because the real objectives of Washington are far removed from all this." Palestinian Al-Hayat al-Jadidah: "The American intentions are to make the Arab region poorer, to drain Arab money completely and to take control of the oil sources. There is no surprise in this because the policies of [US President] Bush Jr, [former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak] Shamir and [Israeli Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon are the same." |
