Bulldozers have started to make a dent in the enormous mound of rubble that used to be the centre of the camp.

The United Nations is clearing space for new housing to be built with money donated by the United Arab Emirates.

This is the third day of the operation - it was interrupted by a week-long curfew.

Workers spray water to settle the clouds of dust that rise in the baking heat.

Bomb disposal experts sift through the debris looking for unexploded ordnance left from the battle.

They are also expecting to find five bodies of persons still missing.

"Nothing will be fair unless the Israelis are made to take responsibility for what they did," they say. "And anyway we don't expect anything from the international community any more."

This last is the widespread feeling among the traumatised and disillusioned here.

The UN may repair their houses but it will not give them justice.
