| Wednesday, 5 February, 2003, 12:22 GMT Frasier star considers new series ![]() Frasier has been struggling with poor ratings Plans to scrap the hit US comedy Frasier could be put on hold after its star, Kelsey Grammer, said he would consider one more series. Grammer said he was satisfied with the $1.6m he was being paid per episode. "I'm making enough," he said in the 8 February edition of TV Guide. If Grammer were to go ahead with another series it would make psychiatrist Frasier Crane the longest-running character on television, at 21 years, including the time on Cheers.
The comedy, which started in 1993, has been one of NBC's biggest hits of the last decade, winning 21 Emmys and two Golden Globes. But there had been plans to scrap the show because of spiralling production costs and a dip in ratings. Frasier producers pay seven-figure wages to the show's two stars, Grammer and David Hyde Pierce, who plays his brother Niles. It also has other production costs of $3.2m (2m) per episode. Frasier grew out of the comedy Cheers, set in a bar run by former baseball star Sam Malone (Ted Danson). Grammer's character first appeared in Cheers in 1984. Grammer had said he wanted to move to the next stage of his career, producing TV rather than starring in it. His film career has struggled to take off, and in 2000 he took on the role of Macbeth in Broadway only for the play to close a week later. | See also: 22 Jan 03 | Entertainment 25 Sep 02 | Entertainment 30 Sep 02 | Entertainment 02 Aug 02 | Entertainment 01 May 02 | Entertainment 30 Apr 02 | Entertainment 23 May 01 | Entertainment Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
