Keane up against Booker winner
Roy Keane
Keane's revelations made his book a best-seller
Football star Roy Keane's controversial autobiography will be fighting it out with the Booker Prize winner for the Book of the Year Award.

Keane's book, ghostwritten by Eamon Dunphy, caused a storm when it was published last year after the Manchester United captain admitted deliberately injuring Manchester City player Alf Inge Haaland.

The revelations led to him being fined 150,000 by the Football Association and a five-match ban.

Now his autobiography has been shortlisted in two British Book Award categories, chosen by the publishing world and the public.

Yann Martel
Martel won the Booker Prize in 2002
It will compete against Yann Martel's Booker winner Life of Pi and Michael Moore's Stupid White Men, which criticises US President George W Bush, for the overall book of the year.

Keane also features in the biography section alongside Ulrika Jonsson's Honest and Roy Jenkins' book about Churchill.

Gardening presenter Alan Titchmarsh is competing in the illustrated book category alongside Kylie Minogue's La La La and Michael Palin's Sahara book which accompanied his BBC series.

The TV and film shortlist features JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Jamie's Kitchen by Jamie Oliver and the scripts from TV comedy The Office.

Among those competing for the author of the year awards are David Attenborough, Donna Tartt, Tipping the Velvet writer Sarah Waters and the late Douglas Adams.
