| Friday, 3 January, 2003, 16:55 GMT Chicago shows box office promise ![]() Gere stars with Renee Zellweger in Chicago Golden Globe-nominated movie Chicago has entered the top 10 UK film chart, despite only being shown on one screen in the entire country. The lavish screen version of the stage musical, starring Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta Jones and Renee Zellweger, is not released across the UK until 17 January. But preview shows at the Warner West End cinema in London have taken �81,000 in the four days following its Boxing Day release, giving an early indication of how it will perform when it opens nationwide.
There is little change in the rest of the box office chart as Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers convincingly holds on to the top spot. It took �8.1m over the three-day weekend period following Christmas, bringing its total takings in the two weeks since its release to �26.3m. The second instalment in the Harry Potter series continues to attract audiences, ensuring it remains at number two in the box office chart. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets took �1.5m over the weekend period, bringing its seven-week total to �48.1m.
Reese Witherspoon's Sweet Home Alabama has swapped places with The Santa Clause 2, moving it into fourth position. The tale of a woman who escapes her white trash roots to make it as a New York fashion designer and socialite, it took �919,875 in its second week of release. The only other new entry in the top 15 is Blood Work, a thriller directed by and starring Clint Eastwood.
