A list of the top 100 most influential people in the art world includes collectors, businessmen, a pub landlady, but very few artists.

The top 10 of ArtReview magazine's list includes just one artist, German painter Gerhard Richter, with the rest mainly coming from the business sector.

Advertising tycoon Charles Saatchi heads the list, which is chosen by critics, dealers and other experts, for his contribution to the British art scene.

He is credited with the creating the Young British Artist movement, which includes Tracey Emin and Damian Hirst.

When Emin was a relatively unknown artist, Saatchi bought her now infamous unmade bed for �150,000, and he has continued to champion modern art by putting on headline-grabbing exhibitions such as I Am a Camera and Sensation.

Pub landlady to many of the Young British Artists, Sandra Esquilant of the Golden Heart in Spitalfields, central London, has landed at number 80 for providing a warm and creative atmosphere for her patrons.

Jewish art

Businessmen Francois Pinault and American Ronald Lauder, heir to the Estee Lauder fortune, are placed at second and third.

Mr Pinault bought Christie's auction house in 1999 for �721m, ending 230 years of British ownership, and is an ardent collector of modern paintings.

An �85m museum is being built in Paris to house his vast archive, with the project being overseen by Patricia Barbizet of Christie's, who sits at number 10.

Mr Lauder, an enthusiastic collector, is chairman of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and a leading campaigner in the recovery of stolen Jewish art.

Painter Gerhard Richter, at number four, is able to command millions for his work.

In 2001 a new record was also set for the artist with the oil painting Drei Kerzen reaching �3.8m at auction.

Jailed

The director of Britain's Tate galleries, Nicholas Serota, is at number six.

He has headed the Tate for more than a decade and in 2000 he opened the Tate Modern gallery, to showcase the best in contemporary art.

But modern art and controversy go hand-in-hand, and Sir Nicholas is never far from the fray.

Music mogul

Charles Saatchi has recently described the Turner Prize - which Sir Nicholas chairs - as "claptrap".

At number nine in the ArtReview list is Alfred Taubman, the former chairman of Sotheby's auction house, who is currently serving a one year jail sentence for rigging fees charged to clients. He was also fined $7.5m.

Emin, who recently unveiled her latest creation, This is Another Place at the Modern Art Oxford gallery, is the highest placed British artist at 41, ahead of David Hockney (47), and Damien Hirst (62).

Musical impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber is at number 29, thanks to his passion for collecting.

He recently paid $29.1m (�18.8m) for a Picasso.

Rolf Harris sits at number 100 due to the public's affection for the Australian and for the success of his BBC series Rolf on Art.
