| Tuesday, 3 December, 2002, 08:56 GMT Ferry's painting fails to sell ![]() Bryan Ferry: The singer is an art lover and collector A Victorian oil painting put up for auction by singer Bryan Ferry has failed to sell for a second time. The picture, by Edward Arthur Walton, was expected to fetch between 80,000 - 120,000 at Sotheby's in London on Monday.
The painting, a portrait of Margaret Macfarlane, was included in a sale of Victorian paintings at Sotheby's. Walton, who died in 1922, was one of the leading Scottish painters of the Victorian age. He was part of the group known as the Glasgow Boys, a highly influential circle who studied at the Glasgow Institute of Art in the late 1800s. The painting shows Macfarlane as a 12 or 13-year-old girl, seated on a carved wooden chair. 'Delightful' When the sale was announced in November, the BBC's Antiques Roadshow expert Christopher Wood said: "Walton was well known for doing portraits and this is a particularly charming one, that's why it is worth this kind of money. "I would be very happy to have this picture around. It's a delightful portrait of a girl which should sell well." Ferry, 57, is widely known as an art lover. He studied fine art at Newcastle University, after his father, a miner, had told him not to go into the coal industry. He later went on to worldwide fame as the lead singer of the rock band Roxy Music, and established a later solo career. | See also: 07 Nov 02 | England 09 Apr 01 | Scotland 30 Nov 02 | Entertainment 22 Oct 02 | England 12 Jul 02 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
