TV comedy The Kumars at No 42 was among four UK shows honoured at the International Emmy awards in New York.

The BBC Two spoof chat show shared the Popular Arts prize with an episode of Faking It, Channel 4's reality role reversal programme.

The 30th International Emmys were presented on Monday night by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

They are held annually to honour excellence in international TV programming.

The awards ceremony saw the UK triumph in three of the seven categories.

Kumars star Sanjeev Bhaskar was honoured alongside production colleagues Lissa Evans, Richard Pinto and Sharat Sardana.

Stephen Lambert and Jamie Simpson received the Faking It prize for an episode in which a burger van vendor landed a job as an haute cuisine chef.

John Hay and Peter Tabern were honoured for Stig of the Dump, the children's favourite which has a Sunday teatime slot on BBC One.

Based on the Clive King novel, the drama stars Geoffrey Palmer, Phyllida Law, Johnny Vegas and Lisa Coleman.

John Simpson and his BBC colleague Joe Phua won the News Coverage prize for their November 2001 report Fall Of Kabul, which showed Northern Alliance troops advancing on the Afghan capital.

The Danish Broadcasting Corporation and the Slovak Republic won their first International Emmys.

Denmark won the Drama Series award for Unit One, a police drama based on real crimes.

The Slovak Republic triumphed in the Documentary category with The Power of Good, the story of a man who saved more than 600 Czechoslovak Jewish children from the Nazis in 1939.

Germany won the TV Movie/Mini-series category with Die Manns, a tale about the novel-writing Mann family.

Canada received an arts programming award for Dracula - Pages from a Virgin's Diary, a mix of avant-garde film and choreography based on an original full-length ballet.

Previous UK winners include The Vicar of Dibley, Smack the Pony and Graham Norton.

The awards - based on the American television awards - were set up by the US TV industry after criticism that it was too inward-looking.
